Standard procedure for safely containing, neutralizing, cleaning up, and escalating a leaking lead-acid battery spill.
Steps

Review the SDS and identify the battery acid type
The competent person reviews the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), confirms the battery chemistry, and identifies the electrolyte/acid type before any cleanup begins. Record the battery ID, spill location, and whether the spill is within site response limits.

Stop work and isolate the spill area
The competent person stops nearby work, isolates the spill area, and keeps unprotected personnel out of the zone until cleanup is complete.

Assess the battery condition and spill extent
The competent person inspects the battery from a safe distance and confirms the spill size, source, and whether the battery is cracked, bulging, hot, or actively leaking.

Don the required PPE
The responder dons all required PPE before approaching the spill or handling contaminated materials.

Improve ventilation in the work area
The responder increases airflow in the area without spreading the spill or creating additional exposure.

Contain the liquid with absorbent material
The responder places absorbent material around the spill perimeter first, then builds containment to prevent migration to drains, seams, or adjacent equipment.

Apply neutralizing agent to the spill
The responder applies the site-approved neutralizer slowly and evenly to the contained spill to control the reaction and prevent splashing.

Wait for the neutralization reaction to finish
The responder waits until foaming, fizzing, and visible reaction have fully stopped before disturbing the material.

Collect the neutralized residue
The responder collects the neutralized residue carefully and places it into approved waste packaging without re-aerosolizing dust or splashing remaining liquid.

Clean and inspect the affected surface
The responder cleans the affected surface and verifies that it is free of residue, moisture, and corrosion before the area is returned to service.

Dispose of waste and escalate any non-conformance
The responder secures waste for hazardous disposal and escalates immediately if the spill exceeded site limits, reached a drain, caused exposure, or involved a damaged battery that cannot be safely handled.
