RTU Gas Heat Section Pre-Heating Season Inspection

Pre-heating season inspection for the gas heat section of a packaged rooftop unit (RTU), covering igniter resistance, flame sensor condition, heat exchanger visual inspection, gas train integrity, and flue/venting checks.

Unit Identification and Safety Setup

• RTU identified and work order matches unit location
• Lockout-tagout applied before opening gas heat compartment
• PPE appropriate for gas heat inspection worn
  Select all PPE used for this inspection.
• Area around RTU safe and accessible
  Verify roof access, clear footing, and unobstructed access to the unit.

Ignition Components

• Igniter resistance measured within manufacturer specification
• Igniter element free of cracks, chips, or discoloration
• Igniter wiring and connectors secure with no heat damage
• Ignition compartment free of debris and moisture

Flame Sensor and Burner Area

• Flame sensor cleaned and free of oxidation or buildup
• Flame sensor positioned correctly in burner flame path
• Burners show no visible rust, blockage, or abnormal wear
• Burner compartment clean and free of lint, soot, or loose insulation

Heat Exchanger and Gas Train

• Heat exchanger visually inspected for cracks, corrosion, holes, or soot trails
• Gas valve, unions, and fittings show no visible leakage or deterioration
• Gas piping supports and joints are secure
• Combustion air openings unobstructed

Flue and Venting

• Flue/vent path clear of blockage, nesting, corrosion, or damage
• Flue termination secure and properly routed
• No evidence of flue gas leakage, staining, or backdraft at compartment
