Slack — Notifications, /mango Commands and Channel Posts

Slack

1. What it is

Connecting Slack lets MangoApps meet people where they already chat. They get MangoApps notifications in Slack, use /mango commands to raise tickets or recognize a colleague, and approve recognition nominations from the message itself. Admins can also post a notice about a Communication (a sign-in link to read it) and shared items to Slack channels.

  • Enablement: an administrator connects your Slack workspace once, then chooses app by app what Slack may do.
  • What it is not: asking Slackbot about MangoApps work (“what needs me this shift?”) is a separate feature, controlled in Admin → Security → Connectors. See AI Assistants.

2. Standing it up

  1. Go to Admin → Organization → Integrations, choose Manage Messaging & Sharing, then Connect Slack on the Slack card. Sign in to Slack as someone allowed to add apps to your workspace, and approve.
If Connect Slack is greyed out, MangoApps hasn’t finished setting up Slack for your environment. Contact support.
  2. Open the Slack page (Configure). Under Add App, pick an app and tick what it may do:
    • Slash Commands: its /mango commands work in Slack.
    • Notifications: its notifications are sent to Slack.
    • Channel Posting: it can post to a channel. Communications needs a channel chosen here.
Repeat for each app. The Commands card on the right shows which commands are now on.
  3. Optionally choose a Default Channel, and whether Share may post to Slack channels.
  4. Tell your people. The Tell your employees card has a message ready to copy and send. Nothing in Slack announces the connection on its own.
  5. To check it works, type /mango help in any Slack channel. You should see the commands you turned on.

3. How it fits together

People are matched by work email. MangoApps finds a person by the email on their Slack profile, which must match their MangoApps email. Only people who are active in your organization are matched. Someone who can’t be matched can still type /mango help but can’t raise tickets or give recognition.

A command runs only when two things are true. Its app was added with Slash Commands ticked, and the person has access to that app in MangoApps. /mango help lists exactly the commands that person can use.

Replies are private. Every /mango reply is visible only to the person who typed it, even in a busy channel.

Buttons act for the person who clicks. Approve and Decline on a nomination card check that the clicker is allowed to decide. When it works, the card changes in place to show the outcome and the buttons disappear. When it doesn’t, only the clicker sees why.

The app’s Home tab. Opening the MangoApps app in Slack shows each person the commands they can use.

Ask AI in Slack. Off by default. When an admin ticks Let people ask Ask AI in Slack on the Slack page’s Ask AI card, people can type /mango ask followed by a question for a private answer. They can also message the MangoApps app directly, or @mention it in a channel to get an answer in the thread. Direct messages and @mentions need permissions Slack connections made before this feature don’t have: the card says so, and an admin reconnects Slack to approve them. If the card says Not available yet, MangoApps hasn’t finished setting up its Slack app for your environment. Answers use the person’s own MangoApps access and need Ask AI to be available to them. In a channel, personal questions (pay, leave, reviews and the like) are not answered, and nothing is changed; the reply says to ask privately. A change that someone asks for privately shows a card with Approve and Decline. Only the person who asked can approve it, it expires after 10 minutes, and it works once.

5. Settings

On Admin → Organization → Integrations → Manage Messaging & Sharing → Slack (its Configure button):

  • Registered Apps: each app with the features it has (Commands, Notifications, Channels). To change an app’s features, add it again with the new ticks. The ✕ removes it.
  • Default Channel (default: none).
  • Allow Share to Slack channels, and Who can be sent a record (Only offer channels the sender belongs to).
  • Ask AI: Let people ask Ask AI in Slack (default: off).
  • Disconnect (on the Messaging page) stops everything above. Connecting again brings back the apps and settings you had.

6. More help

  • Microsoft Teams: the same features in Teams.
  • AI Assistants: Slackbot, Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • Notifications: what MangoApps sends and to whom.
