Most Admins create a department for each of their company’s actual departments, such as IT, HR, Sales, and so on. Departments are a great place to post department-level news, announcements, and links related to that department.

Public departments are accessible by anyone in the company, so all users can view content on the department’s pages and join the department to receive news and updates in their activity stream. Private departments are closed off to users who are not members and require approval from department administrators to join.

Departments can have multiple administrators. As departments are generally used for top-down communication, only department administrators can create pages or post news and announcements.  All department members can post updates and leave comments on the department wall.

You can view all Departments in your Domain by selecting the Departments tab on the left-hand navigation. This will take you to a page that displays all Departments in your company. Any Departments with a small lock icon are private. You can see which Departments you’re a member of by selecting My Departments from the dropdown menu.

If there’s a department you would like to join, click on it and then click on the blue Join button on the right side of the screen. Since the department is public, you will become a member right away. If there’s a private department you want to join, you will have to have a Network or Department Administrator add you.
