Prepare for supervised practice
For new Northstar Support agents and the coaches supporting their transition into live-work practice. Northstar Support is a fictional example: use the sequence as a coordination aid, and follow the approved guidance for your actual assignment.
Practice boundaries
Keep practice within the scope agreed for your assignment.
Work only in the practice queue, tools, and interaction types your coach has confirmed for the current assignment.
- Check the assignment and practice scope at the start of the session.
- Pause and ask your coach when a request falls outside that scope.
Open the published reference authorized for your assignment before relying on process details.
- Check that the reference matches the assignment you are practicing.
- If guidance conflicts or seems out of date, ask the coach which approved source governs.
When you are unsure, use the support handoff agreed with your coach rather than improvising an answer or expanding your practice scope.
- Use the agreed support signal or channel.
- Resume only after you have direction for the next step.
Before, during, and after a practice interaction
A short routine for making supervised practice observable and useful.
-
1
Confirm the practice assignment
Review the assigned queue and practice scope with your coach. Ask which interaction types are in scope today. -
2
Open the approved reference
Use the published guidance authorized for this assignment. Raise any mismatch with your coach before relying on conflicting material. -
3
Agree on the support handoff
Confirm how to request help, what to do if the coach is briefly occupied, and who takes the next handoff if the coach is unavailable. -
4
Complete the practice interaction within scope
Follow the agreed practice boundary. Pause and signal the coach when a question or request is outside the scope you confirmed. -
5
Debrief and capture feedback
Discuss one thing that worked, one point to practice next, and any reference or scope question to resolve before another interaction.
A useful coach handoff
Coordination example: raise the uncertainty clearly; do not fill the gap by guessing.
Outside the practice scope
- Pause the practice interaction at the agreed handoff point.
- Tell the coach what does not match the confirmed scope.
- Wait for direction before continuing.
Within the confirmed scope
- Tell the coach which reference is unclear.
- Ask which approved source applies to this assignment.
- Continue only after the guidance is clear.
Questions agents often ask
For a decision tied to a specific assignment, ask the assigned coach.
What if my coach is briefly occupied?
Use the support signal and next handoff you agreed before practice begins. If no handoff was agreed, pause the practice interaction and ask the coach to clarify the route before continuing.
Which reference takes precedence if two sources differ?
Do not choose between conflicting sources yourself. Tell your coach which sources differ and confirm the authorized published guidance for your assignment before relying on either.
What should I bring to a readiness conversation?
Bring a specific example from practice, the guidance or scope question you encountered, and one skill you want to repeat or improve. The coach discusses observations and the next practice focus with you.
What if I am unsure whether an interaction is in scope?
Pause and ask your coach before proceeding. Describe what makes the interaction different from the scope you confirmed.
