Choose a volunteer activity that fits

Northstar Works is a fictional, multi-location employer. This guide shows how employees can compare community activities before joining. Local activities, schedules, locations, and arrangements vary; check the details for the specific opportunity before making plans.

Compare activity types

These fictional examples describe different kinds of contribution, not confirmed local openings.

Community garden support

  • May involve shared outdoor tasks such as preparing beds or organizing supplies.
  • Check the meeting location, weather arrangements, and activity instructions.

Learning and reading

  • May involve organizing learning materials or supporting a group activity.
  • Check the setting, session format, and any preparation requested by the coordinator.

Event setup

  • May involve arranging materials or preparing a shared space before an event.
  • Check the venue, time window, and tasks expected for that session.

Garden supply sorting

A two-hour morning session at a community garden. Volunteers group empty containers, label supply shelves and record missing stock with the activity coordinator.

  • Time: 09:00–11:00 local time, including the opening briefing.
  • Contribution: a labeled supplies area and a short stock note.
  • Before joining: ask about the route from the entrance and the available seated tasks.

Reading-kit preparation

A 90-minute afternoon session in a community library meeting room. Volunteers pair donated books with the matching activity sheets and assemble kits from the coordinator’s list.

  • Time: 14:00–15:30 local time, for one preparation session.
  • Contribution: complete reading kits, with incomplete sets separated for follow-up.
  • Before joining: ask about arrival arrangements and the print size used for the sorting list.

Community-event welcome packs

A one-hour session in a community hall before a weekend event. Volunteers assemble attendee information packs from supplied materials and count the completed bundles.

  • Time: 17:00–18:00 local time, with the pack count included.
  • Contribution: a counted set of ready-to-use welcome packs.
  • Before joining: ask where to meet the coordinator and what to do if arrival is delayed.

How to choose and join

Use the confirmed information and joining instructions for the specific opportunity.

  1. 1

    Choose an activity type

Start with the contribution that interests you, then compare the actual session details rather than assuming every activity in a category is alike.

  2. 2

Check time, place, and participation details

Review the opportunity information for duration, meeting point, tasks, preparation, and access details. Ask the local activity coordinator about anything unclear before committing.

  3. 3

    Follow the confirmed joining route

Use the sign-up or expression-of-interest instructions provided for that activity. If no route is shown, ask the employee participation coordinator where to find the current instructions; reading this guide does not reserve a place.

What to expect: a worked example

An illustrative scenario, not a confirmed Northstar Works event

An employee compares the garden session with the reading-kit session. Both contributions interest them, but they have 90 minutes available and need to understand the seated work arrangements. The library brief fits the available time; they ask its coordinator: “Can the kit preparation be done seated, and is the sorting list available in larger print?”

Before committing, the employee confirms the joining route and checks which company guidance applies to the time away from work. If they later cannot attend, they notify the local coordinator through the confirmed activity contact. The example demonstrates a decision and a handoff; it does not reserve a place.
