Information:

At the bin, follow the local label

Use the disposal-point label and your workplace's approved guide. The Northstar Works examples below are fictional; stream names and accepted materials are not rules for other sites.

Illustrative stream examples

Confirm the label at your disposal point before sorting. Local acceptance rules can differ.

Paper and card

A fictional Northstar office example accepts clean, dry paper and flattened cardboard.

  • A clean paper envelope is an example.
  • Keep food-soiled paper out of this stream unless the local guide says otherwise.

Containers

A fictional Northstar example accepts empty drink cans and plastic bottles.

  • Empty the container first.
  • Follow the local label for any additional preparation.

General waste

A fictional example route for ordinary items not accepted by the other labeled streams.

  • Use this stream only when the local guide directs you to it.
  • Ask about an unlisted item rather than guessing.

Make the sorting choice

Use the posted instructions for the specific disposal point.

  1. 1

    Read the local label

Check the stream name and any preparation or special-handling instructions.

  2. 2

    Prepare the item as directed

For example, empty a container only if the approved local guide instructs you to do so.

  3. 3

    Use the approved route

Place the item in the stream named by the local guide. Do not assume another workplace's rules apply.

If instructions do not cover the item

If an item is unlisted, the label is unclear, or a special-handling instruction is posted, consult the approved guide or the posted site contact. Ask the local Facilities team for the established route. Do not place an uncertain item in an ordinary shared bin based on another site's examples.
