Start with the training plan

For supervisors and experienced operators coordinating observed learning on a defined production task.

Choose one target task

Name an observable task and define its boundaries.

Agree the trainer and focus

Identify the experienced operator, approved reference, and observation focus before practice.

Plan the record handoff

Use the approved local process for recording the observed outcome.

Plan observed learning across production roles

At fictional Northline Components, supervisors use this plan to coordinate practice between a learner and an experienced operator. Before the session, agree the task, trainer, observation focus, and next handoff. Approved local work instructions and competence criteria remain authoritative.

From target task to record handoff

These stages help people coordinate learning; they do not execute a workflow or track completion.

    Supervisor or designated role

Make the learner and trainer roles clear

Use the Northline pack-out example to agree responsibilities before practice. The example is about coordinating observation, not replacing task-specific instructions.

Learner: understand the focus

Practice comparing a pack-out label with the approved order reference, and explain what you would do if they do not match.

  • Ask which approved reference governs the session.
  • Talk through the task before practicing.
  • Raise questions or mismatches with the trainer rather than guessing.

Trainer: demonstrate and observe

Demonstrate using the approved local reference, observe the learner's practice, and give specific feedback on what you saw.

  • Agree the observation focus with the supervisor.
  • Pause practice when a question or mismatch needs clarification.
  • Tell the supervisor whether more practice or another handoff is needed.

Worked example: the trainer’s observation handoff

Fictional coordination notes for Northline’s pack-out-label practice; this is not a competence assessment.

Worked example: the trainer’s observation handoff
Moment What the trainer observed Next handoff
Choose the reference The learner identified the current approved order reference before comparing the sample label. Trainer notes which reference the practice used.
Explain a mismatch The learner noticed a different order identifier but could not explain the local escalation route. Trainer revisits that route using the approved task reference before more practice.
Discuss the next session Learner and trainer agreed to repeat the comparison with another sample after the route was clarified. Supervisor receives the observation and further-practice need through the local competence-record process.

Hand off the observed outcome

This page is a planning aid, not a competence record, approval, qualification, or authorization. The supervisor or designated role uses the organization's approved competence-record destination and locally defined criteria.

In the Northline example, the trainer reports what was observed and whether further practice was discussed. The supervisor then makes the appropriate handoff under the local process. A practice session alone does not establish authorization.

For regulated, safety-critical, or sensitive tasks, use domain-owner-approved local material and follow the applicable process. If the governing reference or next handoff is unclear, pause the training plan and ask the responsible supervisor or domain owner.
