Use the authorized source for current references
This page is a guide to reference types, not a source of acceptance criteria.
Current acceptance criteria, inspection methods, and revisions come only from the applicable approved controlled source. Use your organization's authorized document-control or quality route to locate that source. This curated page does not establish requirements or guarantee that a particular reference applies to a work area.

Four questions to ask about a reference
Scope
Which product, process or work area does this source cover? A familiar title does not establish that it applies to the work in front of you.
Revision
What identifies the revision, and where is its current status recorded? Record the uncertainty when two copies disagree.
Ownership
Which role maintains this reference and can clarify a conflict? Keep that question separate from the decision about the affected work.
Traceability
Can the receiving role locate the same source and understand the unresolved question? Include its title and identifier in the handoff through the approved local channel.
