Review whether communication helped people understand and act

A useful review is about quality and follow-through, not just reach. Look for evidence that employees understood the message, could find the next step, had a fair opportunity to ask questions, and received the promised response.

For the fictional Northstar Services example, the leadership communications lead convenes the review after the event; topic owners confirm the status of open questions before the next planning cycle.

Qualitative review worksheet

Example observations are prompts, not claims about a real organization.

Qualitative review worksheet
Review prompt Example observation Possible next action
Was the main decision understandable? Several questions asked what would change for new requests. Move the scope and effective point earlier in the next opening explanation.
Could employees find the next action? The live session named a checklist, but the recap did not include a verified location. Confirm the approved source before publishing and include it in the recap.
Were questions handled transparently? The facilitator recorded two topics that required confirmation. Assign each topic to an owner role and publish an update point in the recap.
Did the format support participation? Questions clustered around practical team impacts after the context section. Protect more question time or collect questions in advance for the next session.
Did follow-through happen? The plan included a recap but did not yet confirm its publication. Check publication status and close remaining items before planning the next cycle.

Turn the review into the next cycle

A short close-the-loop process for the communications owner and topic owners.

  1. 1

    Gather observable evidence

Review the session recap, question log, employee comments, and whether promised updates appeared. Separate direct observations from interpretations.

  2. 2

Identify one strength and one friction point

For example, retain the clear leader explanation while improving how the recap points to the current source.

  3. 3

    Agree an owner and change

Record the role responsible for the change, the next communication moment it affects, and how completion will be checked.

  4. 4

    Close open questions

Confirm each unresolved item with its topic owner and include the answer or a clear next update point in the agreed channel.
