Make the next handoff clear

EVS, clinical, and facilities roles can coordinate without taking on one another’s responsibilities.

Start with the work area, the observed issue, and its current status. In this fictional Cedar Grove example, an EVS team member notes that floor scrubber FS-12 stopped in the east dining room service alcove. The EVS lead carries the equipment issue to the local facilities handoff and briefs the incoming EVS shift. No patient information is needed.

Use the responsibility reference below to identify the appropriate role for the next step.

Know which role owns the next step

This is a responsibility reference, not a procedure. Use the local handoff route when work crosses role boundaries.

Comparison: EVS compared with Clinical / Facilities
Details EVS Clinical / Facilities
Assigned-area EVS work and its approved reference Carries out assigned EVS work using the approved reference Clinical and facilities teams do not replace the EVS assignment
Clinical or infection-prevention direction Routes the question to the appropriate owner Clinical or infection-prevention owner provides the applicable direction
Building, fixture, or equipment fault Reports the observed issue with location and asset context Facilities role assesses and follows its local process

Pass on unresolved work

Worked example: an equipment issue in the east dining room.

Keep the handoff factual, brief, and free of patient information.

  1. 1

    Name the place and item

“East dining room, service alcove: floor scrubber FS-12.”

  2. 2

    State what you observed

“The unit stopped during the assigned area work and is parked in the service alcove.”

  3. 3

    Record the work status

“That area work is not recorded as complete; the approved reference remains with the assignment.”

  4. 4

    Name the handoff owner

“EVS lead to pass the equipment issue to the local facilities contact and brief the incoming EVS shift.”

Handoff questions

Use role-based routing when the issue falls outside the assigned EVS work.

What if I cannot find an approved reference for my assigned area?

Ask the EVS lead or supervisor to identify the approved reference before proceeding with that part of the assignment. If the question is clinical or infection-prevention-related, the lead routes it to the appropriate owner.

What belongs in a shift handoff?

Include the area, item or asset when known, what you observed, the current work status, and which role owns the next handoff. Leave out patient names, room-level patient details, and other patient information.

Who handles a building or equipment fault?

EVS reports the observed issue and relevant location or asset context. The EVS lead routes it through the local facilities contact or process; facilities assesses the fault.
