Transfer the work, not just the ticket
A useful handoff lets the receiving role understand the customer task, the evidence, what has already been tried, and the next decision. Keep ownership with the current role until the receiving owner acknowledges the transfer.
This sample does not provide a live on-call rota. Use your organization's approved current ownership source to identify who is covering; the source owner should keep its coverage and update cadence clear.
Worked handoff record
Fictional example: report export error after a settings change.
| Handoff field | Sample entry |
|---|---|
| Issue summary | Customer cannot export the monthly report; export returns an error. |
| Impact | The customer's internal review is blocked. Scope beyond this customer is not yet known. |
| Actions tried | Confirmed report period and format; reproduced in the support test workspace; saved exact error text. |
| Current owner | Support Agent remains accountable while the Product Support Lead reviews the evidence. |
| Next action | Product Support Lead checks whether the behavior matches a known change and selects the next investigation route. |
| Customer update | Tell the customer what is being checked; give a timing commitment only if the responsible owner confirms it. |
