Define the boundary before assembling evidence

Fictional example: North Quay House, Level 3 air-handling unit.

For this example, the boundary includes the air-handling unit, its documented controls interface, and the named connections to building services that the project scope assigns to this unit. Adjacent building systems remain outside the example boundary unless an approved project reference explicitly brings an interface into scope.

When a boundary or interface is unclear, record the question and route it to the accountable project or domain owner. Do not silently expand the scope.

Boundary reference matrix — illustrative

Authored example only; roles and evidence references are not verified project records.

Boundary reference matrix — illustrative
Boundary element Evidence to associate Accountable role
Level 3 air-handling unit Equipment identification reference matched to the agreed unit boundary Commissioning coordinator
Documented controls interface Controls interface reference linked to the unit and its defined interface Controls specialist
Building-services connection Approved interface reference identifying the connection and responsible party Project domain owner
Adjacent system outside this example Record an interface question if the scope relationship is unclear Commissioning coordinator with relevant domain owner

If the boundary is unclear or changes

Keep the distinction between scope and evidence visible.

Scope question

Describe the specific question

Name the equipment or interface, the reference that raised the question, and what decision is needed.

  • Identify the affected boundary element.
  • Link the question to its available source reference.
  • Route it to the accountable project or domain owner.
Project handoff

Record a scope change through the project process

If the agreed boundary changes, use the organization's established scope-control process and update associated evidence references through that process.

  • Keep the prior boundary distinguishable from the proposed change.
  • Identify affected evidence and interfaces.
  • Do not treat this page as a change approval.
